The first time it happened, I felt like everyone around me was speaking a foreign language; they weren’t, but I simply could not comprehend what they were saying. As these instances increased in frequency, I withdrew more out of fear and embarrassment, questioning my abilities and worth. I felt incapable of doing even the most rudimentary tasks and soon came to the realisation that I was struck with a paralysing, clinical depression. The power of my own negative thoughts constrained my ability to function, and I was stuck in a cycle of negative self-talk, bound by my own debilitation.
BOUND is a collection of body adornments that speak to the bondage that we carry, often concealed, throughout our day-to-day lives. The works contained within this series form to the wearer, representing the way bondage has conformed to our psyche. To mirror the multiple ways bondage manifests itself in our lives, these pieces follow suit; multiple configurations are possible to suit the circumstances or occasion. By referencing bondage motifs like physical constraint, my desire is to invite the viewer to consider the ways in which they too are bound, whether by internal or external forces.
